PRESS RELEASE

Hellas Gold invests in the next generation of geologists

Funds a new Master’s Programme at the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens

With an active presence and meaningful contribution, Hellas Gold took part in the career orientation event “Geology in Action: The Geologist’s Profession Today,” organised by the Association of Greek Geologists with the participation of the Geology Departments of three Greek universities: the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and the University of Patras. The event was hosted at the iconic central building of the University of Athens.

The event served as an important bridge between academia and the labour market, bringing students and recent graduates into direct dialogue with experienced professionals from across the geological sciences. Representing the raw materials sector, Georgios Gkekas, Chief Geologist at the Skouries Project, presented the modern practices of smart mining and highlighted the geologist’s role as a key pillar of sustainable development. Through his discussion with students, he underlined the importance of geology in shaping the future of the sector, shed light on the many dimensions of the profession in practice, and outlined the skills a modern mining company looks for.

As part of this broader effort to strengthen specialisation and connect education with real-world needs, the launch of the new Master’s Programme in “Exploration and Sustainable Exploitation of Mineral Resources” at the Department of Geology and Geoenvironment of the University of Athens was also announced. The programme, which is additionally supported by the other two Geology Departments, is fully funded by Hellas Gold, representing a strategic investment in the expertise and skills of the next generation of geoscientists in the field of mineral resources.

The company’s support for this new postgraduate programme forms part of a wider set of initiatives it implements consistently to strengthen education and support young scientists and professionals. Through partnerships with universities and educational institutions, scholarship programmes, internship opportunities and career orientation activities, Hellas Gold aims both to connect academic knowledge with the real needs of the labour market and to help young people develop the soft, social and technological skills that will strengthen their career prospects and employability.
